My artist books explore a wide range of themes...many inspired by my travels. In some way they all investigate my main interest in origins: of words, religions, colors, foodways and many other things we often take for granted. Unlike many artists' books, which have immediate impact on the viewer, my books ask to be read and pondered. They are intended to illuminate and inform but also to invite the reader into a greater mystery. I find the artist's book ideal for my personal expression--as if my background, education and experiences led me to this medium.

Excerpt from Phil Isaacson's "In the Arts" review of "Exposure X 20" at Galeyrie, Falmouth, Maine

"...Somehow the gallery has felicitously installed two examples of work by each of those 20 artists. Forty works--some as large as pieces by Sharon Townshend--well presented in a small space is in itself noteworthy. One artist among them, however, Bessie Smith Moulton, raises no issue as to size. A maker of exquisite small books, her works are masterpieces of topography[sic], letterpress printing, design and float from the chaste to the jubilant. They are complex and irresistible."
