Welcome! The Maine Arts Journal; UMVA Quarterly is a living breathing ever-changing expression of the Maine arts community as seen through the lens of the MAJ editorial board and with the support of the Union of Maine Visual Artists.
Our new web presence was launched in April, 2017 to help meet the desire of our members, subscribers and board to be more accessible to view, to make it easier to find articles, share and produce.
The publication began as a simple newsletter of the UMVA. The original goal was to connect the artist members spread all across Maine in the decades before the internet allowed such communication to be at our fingertips. As times, technology, and the needs of artists have changed, the "newsletter" has changed as well.
From 2014 – 2016 the newsletter morphed into an arts journal as the quantity and quality of submissions continued to grow. The newsy information about upcoming exhibitions, calls for art, calendars-of-events and classes was more effective as a blog and is still available through the UMVA Newsletter.
The Journal features essays by and about artists, interviews, UMVA Member submissions, poetry, UMVA updates about local chapters and current projects and more.
The MAJ is organized around quarterly themes to which we encourage members to submit.
Submission information and guidelines are to be found HERE. Please view the current issue and explore the archived issues that are available through the main menu.
We welcome your feedback on current features, proposals for future issues, and your ideas/submissions for upcoming themes. Our new format allows for comments. We hope to hear from you. And we hope you will join the Union of Maine Visual Artists.
